A Friend To Nature

Advancements in technology and environmental conservation may not always have gone hand in hand, but an organization in Koramangala has worked to bring the two together. Centre for Action Research and Technology for Man, Animal, and Nature (CARTMAN) uses modernization as a tool to come up with environmentally viable solutions, especially for those residing in rural India.

Growing Personally and Professionally

Daylight floods the narrow halls of the Seva Sadan Institute. Outside, a boy hunches over a metal sheet, trying to steady his grip. One of the many destitute boys at the institute who were made to drop out of school in their early teens, he has now found the means to survive by sharpening his technical skills. “The children who practice and learn these skills get recruited into major companies even before they finish their courses,” says Pius Kizhakkebhagam, the Local Superior who has been part of the Seva Sadan Institute since 1973.

Ink, Paper and Life in Monochrome

Impressions and Expressions, a photography exhibition by K. Prabhakar, engages the audience in the story of the common man. Through his lens, K. Prabhakar captures the quaint charm of rural life where women cook their food in earthenware while men tend to the cattle and work at sea. Bathed in monochrome, the gallery was in tune with the photographs that were taken over 20 years ago.

A Penchant for ‘Biryani’

“I'm teaching the third generation of girls now, it's been 44 years since I've been teaching how to cook,” says Mumtaz Khan. Soft-spoken and draped in a simple sari, she first excuses herself to offer her evening prayers. An eminent chef and caterer in the city, Mumtaz Khan belongs to one of the oldest families in Hyderabad – she is the granddaughter of Shahzoor Jung, a close friend of the Nizam. She speaks fondly of the house she grew up in, Shah Manzil, which now houses the Raj Bhavan.

Peaceful Locality Despite Issues

Awarded “Best Colony” by the GHMC, the environment at Shantinagar, Masab Tank was once a sylvan surrounding with minimal traffic, sometimes punctuated by small bursts of activity in the children's park. The colony is now dimly-lit and decrepit – the parks are home to heaps of unattended garbage and the area has been constantly in the news for many episodes of chain-snatching.

Fruity Flavors of Famous’ Rule

With temperatures in the city soaring to over 40 degrees this summer, Famous Ice Cream at Moazzamjahi Market served as a welcome escape to Hyderabadis from the scorching summer heat. Incidentally, the shop has come a long way from selling only three ice cream flavors over 55 years ago. The old building now witnesses several customers daily from far-off places in the city to get a taste of their handmade ice cream.
